Biography
Raised in East Anglia, Kirsty's lived in the East, North and West of England, as well as in Italy and Greece. She's a storyteller, writer and speaker, and also a part-time museum curator.
Storytelling: She has a repertoire of stories from around the world and from the dawn of time to the present day. She specialises in telling English, Celtic and Greek stories, as well as stories drawn from history. She was the co-founder of Stroud Story Cabaret in 2011, which hosted storytellers and musicians such as Vergine Gulbenkian, Jane Flood and Matt Sage, ran the Stroud Story Circle and currently runs Fire Springs and Friends, a monthly email roundup of the best local storytelling and spoken word events. She's committed to using storytelling as a way to bring the past alive in museums and has told stories, and presented gallery talks and tours, in a diverse range of heritage venues. Please see here for a list of her shows.
Writing: She combines writing folk tale collections and other fiction with writing talks, reviews and articles on the fine, decorative and typographic arts. She was the editor of the Society for Decorative Art Collections journal from 2009-2018, wrote a regular column for the Gloucestershire Echo until 2020, and has been a regular columnist for Cotswold Life since 2019. She is currently working on a publication about the studio ceramics collection at Museum & Art Swindon. Please see here for a list of her publications.
Museums: She works part-time as a museum curator, currently based at Swindon Museums. From 2008-2023 she curated the decorative and fine art collections at The Wilson, Cheltenham, including the Designated Arts and Crafts Movement collection. She has worked in the heritage industry for nearly 30 years – dealing with decorative art, fine art, cemeteries, transport, local history and archaeology. She cut her heritage teeth in museum education, working primarily with school groups and families, but has been a curator for more than 25 years. A large part of her work in museums is about drawing stories from the objects in her care, and inviting the public to develop their own interpretations. Major projects and exhibitions include: Beneath the Surface: A Century of Studio Ceramics (forthcoming 2026); A Very British Art Revolution (2025); Un/Common People (2024); Ernest Gimson: Observation, Imagination and Making (2019); and Crafting Change (2016) as well as numerous gallery redisplays and exhibitions about social history, Arts and Crafts, and the private presses. She can also be hired as a museum consultant for funding bids, Accreditation, research and exhibition curation.
